Sahara Desert Tour from Marrakech: What to Expect
By the Morocco Calling family · · 6 min read

A trip to the Sahara is the highlight of most journeys to Morocco. But the dunes are a long way from Marrakech, and many travellers are not sure what the experience is really like. As a family with roots in the desert, here is our honest guide to what to expect.
How far is the Sahara from Marrakech?
There are two main desert areas you can reach from Marrakech:
- Merzouga (Erg Chebbi): the tall, golden dunes you see in photographs. It is roughly 550 km from Marrakech, so we recommend at least 3 days. See our 3 Days Marrakech to Merzouga tour.
- Zagora: closer (about 360 km), with smaller dunes and beautiful palm groves along the Draa Valley. Ideal if you only have 2 days — see our 2 Days Marrakech to Zagora tour.
The journey is part of the adventure
Yes, there are long hours in the car — but the road itself is spectacular. You cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, visit the kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, drive through the Valley of Roses and walk inside the Todra Gorge. On a private tour you stop whenever you want, and your driver adapts the pace to you.
The camel trek
In the late afternoon you meet your camels at the edge of the dunes. The ride to camp usually lasts around an hour to an hour and a half, timed so that you reach the top of a dune for sunset. Camels are calm animals and no experience is needed. If you prefer not to ride, the camp can often be reached by 4x4 instead — just let us know.
Life at the desert camp
Desert camps range from simple traditional tents to comfortable "luxury" camps with private bathrooms. Dinner is usually a tagine shared around the table, followed by Berber drumming around the fire and a sky full of stars — far from any city lights. Wake up early: sunrise over the dunes is unforgettable.
What to pack
- A small overnight bag (your suitcase stays in the vehicle)
- Warm layers: desert nights can be cold, especially from November to March
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf to protect you from sun and sand
- Comfortable shoes you do not mind filling with sand
- A power bank — electricity at camps can be limited
When to go
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable temperatures. Summer days are extremely hot in the Sahara, so tours start early and the middle of the day is spent resting in the shade. Read more in our guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
Private or group tour?
Group tours from Marrakech are cheaper, but you share a minibus with up to 16 or more people and follow a fixed schedule. A private tour gives you your own vehicle and English-speaking driver, flexible timing and the freedom to choose your accommodation. That is the only kind of tour we offer.
