Morocco Calling

Our home in the Sahara

Our Merzouga

The desert we grew up in, shared the way only a local family can.

Iddir, founder of Morocco Calling

A word from Iddir

“Merzouga is not just a stop on a tour for us. It is home: where we grew up, where our family still lives, and the place we love sharing most.”

Many tours arrive in the dunes at sunset and leave at dawn. With us you meet the people of the desert, eat what we eat and see the corners of Erg Chebbi that we have known since we were children.

Signature experiences

Eight ways to live the Sahara like a local

Camel caravan crossing the dunes of the Sahara

Tea with a nomad family

Step inside the tent of a nomad family who still live with their animals around the dunes. Share mint tea, ask your questions and discover a way of life that has resisted time. Our family knows them personally, so you are welcomed as friends, not as tourists.

Lanterns and chairs set up at a Sahara desert camp

Berber pizza baked in the sand

Madfouna, the 'Berber pizza', is bread stuffed with meat, onions, spices and almonds, then buried in the hot sand under the embers of a fire. Watch it being prepared the traditional way and taste it straight out of the sand.

Camel trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunrise

Sunrise from the highest dune

Before dawn we climb the tallest dune of Erg Chebbi together. Sit in the cool sand and watch the light turn the whole desert from blue to pink, then gold. It is the moment most of our guests remember for ever.

Berber musicians playing drums by the fire at a desert camp

Gnawa music and Berber drums

In the village of Khamlia, Gnawa musicians keep alive a spiritual music brought across the Sahara centuries ago. At night, around the fire, the drums of the camp make everyone dance.

A night under the stars

Far from any city light, the Milky Way crosses the whole sky. Bring a blanket outside the tent and fall asleep counting shooting stars.

4x4 and quad in the dunes

Explore the edges of Erg Chebbi, the black desert and the old mines by 4x4, or feel the thrill of the dunes on a quad bike (on request).

Sandboarding

Climb a dune, strap on a board and slide down the soft sand. Fun for families, friends and anyone young at heart (on request).

Lunch with our family

Be our guest at home in Merzouga for a family lunch or a tea: the real Moroccan hospitality, with the people who will look after you.
